3 Para Group WO's and Sgt's Mess members Bahrein
3 Para Group WO’s and Sgt’s Mess including 7 RHA and RAF Detachment members, Hamala Camp.
The chap with the cross on his chest is “Bob Hind” RAF P.J.I. he was with 3 Para for years including Pitts Rd in Aldershot. He was the Library Officer with the Western Australia Ministry of Justice when I joined them in 1980.
Tug Wilson is on the right in the second row. How many more names can be added?

Front Row, 3rd in from the left, Geoff Stead CSM 'B' Coy, fondly known as Steady Geoff by us underlings. Would be able to pick out more if I could zoom in. Got to know Joe Day well on watermanship course in Jebel Alley and Internal Security in British Guyana. Does anyone know their whereabouts and contact details?

Yup "Spud" is definitely that man, I am his son and have just come across this forum after a random search for "3 Para in Malta".
Spud is suffering from Alzheimers and has done so now for nearly 3 years, he settled back in his home town of Troon, Ayrshire approx 8 years after demobbing. But about 18 months ago he had to be placed in a secure nursing home near there because his medical condition deteriorated so badly. he spends most of his time now in the past and his many ventures with the Parachute Regiment. the last time I saw him he thought I was one of his trainees on a driving cadre. Not good seeing like that but he did have a fruitful life.

I think it is SQMS Ollie to the right of Bandmaster. He was No1 (Top Chef) in the Cookhouse at Normandy Bks. Whilst acting orderly officer one lunch time he asked us toms "any complaints" to which I cheekily replied " Yes sir". "Well", he said. "Eaten them sir", I quickly added. It was not a good idea to say there was anything wrong with the scoff especially if you were on cookhouse fatigues the following week.

Another name:-
2nd Row 3rd from left, Griff Williams between Joe Day and Scouse Tynan. If I've got the right guy he was a good mate of Tommy Morrisons and my Pl Sgt in Depot (273 Pl).

I am sorry to hear about "Spuds" terrible illness,i remember he was best mates with Ted Heath who later made RSM of 2 Para i think, they were always together when they were in the MT Pln.

Thats right Tug, Ted was my Godfather, he passed on about 22-23 years ago now after a short illness. I do remember your name from the past as well more than likely from the Sgts Mess when they had the rugrats and families lunches, mebbe even Spud talking about you. My mother Dot remembers you as well and many of the other names I saw on here. She is trying to look for some photos for me to post on here as well for you guys

When "Ted" was the cook Sgt in 3 Para he got run out of the Bn. by the lads after a bad christmas dinner, they threw a rope over a beam in the cookhouse to hang him with and went to get him,but he managed to escape by jumping on his motorbike and speeding away.It was only later that he returned to the Bn. as WO2 back in charge,i used to wind him up about that incident,he just used to laugh and try to say it never happened, but i remember it,great bloke though all the same.RIP Ted.

The first time we went anywhere with the Bn as a family was to Malta in 1968/9 on our return we were posted to 4 Para in Pudsey near Leeds, and then returned to the Shot in 1972.

C'mon guys I have been in touch with Alec using e-mail, as poor Spud got rid of most of his military photos etc. I have sent a couple to Alec so dig deep into your albums and see if you can send him anything to do with his dads time in 3 Para, keep it off the site just use e-mail tell him what you have and I'm sure he will appreciate it.

To be honest "Dinger" i can't now remember if "Dad" was on that tour but i suppose he was or you wouldn't have asked, was he in D Coy with you and "Pony" at that time?
The only one that looks like "Dad" is in the 3rd rank,3rd from the right but i couldn't be sure of that now, like you, the eyes are not as good as they used to be.

G'day Dinger, I'm not sure that "Dad" was on the tour either! If you look Channon is the RSM in the photo now later on in the tour "Nobby Arnold" became RSM. Arthur Watchus moved to "D" McNaughton became the Drill Sgt Maj. and correct me if I'm wrong but "Tom Duffy" was the MTO. another two names not mentioned so far in the rear row is Sid Roberts and Fred Harvey. possibly there were still some folks down Aden way when the photo was taken?

Yes some must have been elsewhere Nick,as i know for a fact Pete Garratty(Spelling) was on that tour as well and i don't see him,and that's only one so it's quite probable there were others and where is "Nobby"
By the way nick, RSM Silvers took over from Arthur not Nobby.Nobby was drill Sgt Maj under Silvers in Guiana prior to Nobby taking over as RSM when Silvers went to the Depot, and he and Silvers didn't get on at all.
I think i'm right, but you never know these days!!!.

Tug, now I am confused, I didn't go to Guyana, if you remember we went the other way to Borneo as an independent Coy. However that was in 66 so where was "Nobby" and all the rest of the blokes we cant find? On the photo which I know was taken in Bahrain the second tour. Bloody gremlins again

Hi Nick & Tug
"Dad" was definitley on that tour , I was in "A"Coy at the same time as him. (could have been a "Jebel Ali" jaunt at that time)
"Nobby" could have been down in Aden when that photo was taken as he was in charge of the boxing team.

It's all water under the bridge now with memorys fading, we need sombody who kept a list of the coy nominal rolls like Jim Austen did with "B" Coy in Malta. Suffice to say a lot of those guys are no longer with us and as has been shown that everybody was not always friends either. So this Christmas lads instead of raising a glass to absent friends, just raise a glass to all those "Past and Present members of 3rd Battalion The Parachute Regiment.
