This was put on another site by Kenny Everett(ex 3 Para and the Freds) i thought it might be of interest to you all.

70TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FORMATION OF AIRBORNE FORCES

FORMATION

1. On 22nd June 1940 Winston Churchill, the Prime Minister, anxious to get back into Germany, sent a note to the War Office asking them to raise a Corps of at least 5,000 parachutists. In October 1941 Major General F A M (Boy) Browning DSO was ordered to form an Airborne Division and was appointed its GOC. Under his guidance The Parachute Regiment was formally established as a Corps of the Army on the 1st August 1942 and by the end of the following year the 1st Airborne Division was formed.

ANNIVERSARY

2. The 70th anniversary of Winston Churchill’s directive will take place in June 2010 and events will be held in London and Colchester to celebrate Airborne Forces achievements both past and present. The events will take the following format.

THE ROYAL HOSPITAL CHELSEA - 24 JUNE 2010.

3. A Chapel Service, Reception and Dinner will be held at The Royal Hospital Chelsea. This will be an invitation only event.

MERVILLE BARRACKS COLCHESTER - 24 JULY 2010.

4. A day to celebrate the formation of Airborne Forces, their achievements, both past and present and a chance to show support for 16 Air Assault Brigade, the Airborne Force of the current day. This event will be a free, but ticketed event. Tickets should be applied for through The Regimental Association at RHQ. The day will include a Parade, Drumhead Service, arena displays, Cocktail Party and ‘Beating the Retreat’.

COMMEMORATIVE BROCHURE

5. A Commemorative Brochure will be launched in May 2010 to mark the occasion. This will have a foreword by the Colonel in Chief and will have articles and pictures covering all seven decades of Airborne Forces. This limited addition brochure will be on sale from May through RHQ, ABP Retail Ltd and at all Parachute Regiment and Airborne Functions.

6. This prestigious brochure has already attracted adverts and sponsorship from a variety of firms, the front cover sponsored by Boeing Defence Ltd UK, but space is still available. If you know a firm that would like to advertise across the ABF community then please get in touch with Lt Col (Retd) Dave Reynolds 01752312061, the rates are of course very reasonable.

SPONSORSHIP

7. Opportunities also exist to sponsor this summer’s events for firms that would like to take advantage of these unique events. These opportunities range from sponsorship of the Reception at Chelsea to stands and events at Colchester in return for an opportunity to target the ABF community. Enquires should be through Mr Stephen Cooper (01206 817082) who has kindly agreed to manage fund raisings for the anniversary events.

SUPPORT

8. Any support that you feel that you or your organisation can bring to either event would be gratefully considered. Enquires should be directed through Lt Col (Retd) Rodgers 01206817072.
